• Why do people get jealous?

H. Background Information for this study: 

Saul is the King of Israel and at this point David is one of his leaders in the army. They win a big battle with their enemy and the people are celebrating. David did a great job and the people are celebrating David's victory. Saul becomes jealous. David has no desire to take Saul's place as king. David just wants to do his best. The jealousy in Saul leads to God's spirit departing from him and an evil spirit entering him - a jealous spirit. He tries to kill David.

In Matthew 25 the key point is that we be content with what God has given us in our life and not compare ourselves to others. We do the best we can with what we have and we all will hear the exact same compliment from The Lord.  Life is not a competion but we do the best we can with what God has given us. .

First Section: 1 Samuel 18 6:6-7. The situation that gives rise to jealousy in Saul.

Second Section: 1 Samuel 18:8-16. Jealousy enters Sauls life and the consequences

Third Section: Matthew 25:14-30. Jesus parble on contentment.

This is Matthew's account of the death and resurrection of Jesus. Remember Matthew was an eye withness of what he writes about. He saw Jesus dead and then he saw Jesus risen from the dead. Make sure you make the connection between the ressurection of Jesus and having hope in our life and our situations.

This is a psalm of King David. In this Psalm David is encouraging us to put our trust in the Lord. Verse 8 is key. David states, "Trust in Him at all times, you people." As you read the Psalm notice all of the ways that David describes the Lord - rock, salvation, fortress, refuge, God's power and God's unfailing love. Discuss these different aspects of God and what they mean in our lives. 

First Section: Psalm 62:1-4. God's characteristics and the situation David is in.

Second Section: Psalm 62:5-8. David's encouragement to find rest and hope and to trust in God.

Third Section: Psalm 62:9-12. Why people and money are not good to put our whole trust in.

Both of these scriptures deal with encounters with Jesus as the risen King on His throne. Both Isaiah and John had an encounter with Jesus. Notice their responses in terms of how they see themselves and how they respond to Jesus call. Apply it to the lives of the members of the group.
